12/30/2023 0 Comments Nikka whiskey reviews![]() Nice job by Nikka, overall a nice whisky even though it could have been a stronger. Balance: Stingy and sharp, yet fresh and vibrant blended malt whisky. Sherry and red fruits coming through in the aftertaste. I don't really expect every whiskey to be super exciting and different, but this is just boring and borders on cloying while also being generally thin. Green fresh apples making it sharp and straight forward. Let’s uncover this Japanese Whisky from the great white north in this Nikka Yoichi Single Malt review. It's one note, a bit hot, and just isn't all that interesting. This isn't terrible, but suffers from the same complex as the Coffey Grain in my opinion. The stronger sherry character really shines through, supplemented with the bourbon-aged, grain, and peaty whiskey. Short, loaded with pears, vanilla and butterscotch. It grows astringent with time and some cassia notes start to take shape. Vanilla and butterscotch are really dominant and there is a light bakers bread note as well. Thin to medium mouthfeel with a good bit of heat. Plenty rich and flavoursome, its a wonderful addition to. ![]() The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky was introduced to their selection of expressions in 2014. Really perfume-y with some orange peel, lots of vanilla and faint spice. While most distilleries use their Coffey stills only to make grain whisky, Nikka use the two Coffey stills at their Miyagikyo distillery to create malt whisky too. Lots of butterscotch - bordering on bomb territory. They appear to do this quite often, given the amount of these bottles rotting on my shelves locally. ![]() Nikka usually only uses their Coffey stills for grain whiskey distillation, but decided to push some malt distillate through as well.
